PRIMARY PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Our tailored training provides teaching and non-teaching primary school staff continued professional development in order to place PE at the heart of pupils’ learning.

Twilight INSET sessions and regular in-house teacher training is individually designed according to the specific requirements of each school. Courses are suitable for staff with or without PE experience.

Subject-specific training can be provided in athletics, games and gymnastics while pedagogical topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessment

  • Classroom management

  • Differentiation

  • Inclusion

  • Teaching and learning styles

Our primary professional learning programme is delivered using resources and teaching aids that are widely regarded as industry-leading.

Participants receive teaching theory and practice covering key technical points and application for both able-bodied pupils and those with additional needs. All content conforms to national curriculum requirements and complements both the Association for Physical Education and Youth Sports Trust objectives.

Outstanding Primary PE

This one-day course certified by the CPD Certification Service will provide delegates with the knowledge and ideas to deliver Outstanding Primary Physical Education lessons. Topics include the National Curriculum for PE; delivery of Invasion Games; Outdoor and Adventurous Activities and Athletics; Assessment Strategies; the STEP Principle of Differentiation; Teaching Styles and things to consider when planning lessons. Finally, some top tips for teaching lessons are presented.

Inclusion, Differentiation and SEND in PE

This half-day course certified by the CPD Certification Service will provide delegates with knowledge and ideas to differentiate learning and include all pupils in their Physical Education lessons. Topics include Definitions of Exclusion, Segregation, Integration and Inclusion; The Inclusion Spectrum; The STEP Principle of Differentiation and how to apply it; Factors that influence inclusion; Disability and Impairment; Types and Models of Disability; Understanding what inclusive PE provision looks like and Delivery techniques for an inclusive feel.

Since September 2017, we have delivered the Sports Leaders UK’s Level 5 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism and the Level 6 Award in Primary School Physical Education Subject Leadership.

The Level 5 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism

Upskills primary school teachers, higher level teaching assistants and teaching assistants with extensive experience to improve the overall delivery of the PE curriculum within their school. Those taking the qualification will learn how to understand curriculum requirements, the links between pedagogy principles and child development, and how using a range of activities can impact on better teaching and learning.

The Level 6 Award in Primary School Physical Education Subject Leadership

Builds on the Level 5 Certificate to enable primary teachers to take subject leadership within their school’s PE teaching. Course attendees will be taught how to determine the quality of provision and design, lead implementation of, review and revise a targeted strategy to develop primary school physical education and its sustainability.

The Level 5 Certificate is delivered over six tutored days across the academic year. Those also wishing to attain the Level 6 Award need to attend a further two days.

Who can attend?

  • Level 5: Primary School Teachers, HLTAs, TAs and Sports Coaches (with a minimum of 5 years’ experience delivering PE across both KS1 and KS2)

  • Level 6: Primary School Teachers
